Kyle McCord Transferring From Ohio State Due to QB1 Questions, NIL Concerns per Report
Ohio State quarterback Kyle McCord raised eyebrows when he decided to enter the transfer portal earlier in December.
McCord's reported reasoning for doing so may raise even more. According to Bill Rabinowitz of The Columbus Dispatch, McCord sought—and did not get—assurances that he would remain Ohio State's starting QB after inquiring with coach Ryan Day following the loss to Michigan.
Additionally, the Buckeyes QB reportedly desired to make more money in name, image and likeness (NIL) deals, a desire Ohio State was reportedly "not willing" to meet.
Rabinowitz adds that top QBs in the portal have reportedly been offered well over $1 million in NIL money. McCord, facing the possibility of not being the starter in 2024 and not earning as much in NIL money, decided to leave for potentially greener pastures.
The junior QB completed 65.6 percent of his passes for 3,170 yards, 24 touchdowns and six interceptions. Ultimately, McCord was judged by his performance against the rival Wolverines, which saw him throw for 271 yards and two touchdowns, but also two interceptions.
Day clearly felt a national championship wasn't possible with McCord under center—and McCord felt his own personal goals wouldn't be met staying in Columbus.
