It's been nearly 30 years since Happy Gilmore entered the lives of golf lovers everywhere and those fans now have reason to believe a new sequel is in the works. Christopher McDonald, the actor who played the cartoonishly evil Shooter McGavin, appeared on Cleveland sports radio station 92.3 The Fan on Friday and was asked about his role opposite Adam Sandler. McDonald took it upon himself to reveal that he saw Sandler recently and was shown the script to Happy Gilmore 2.

As transcribed from a clip posted by 92.3 The Fan's X account:

"I saw Adam about two weeks ago and he goes, 'McDonald, you're going to love this.' And I say, 'What?' He says 'How 'bout that,' and he goes and shows me the first draft of 'Happy Gilmore 2," McDonald told the hosts. "Maybe you should cut that out because I don't want to be a liar but he did show me that and I thought, 'Well, that would be awesome.' It's in the works. Fans demand it, dammit!"

This is obviously tremendous news for fans of the original Happy Gilmore. It should be good news to sports fans everywhere, too. There are maybe a handful of great golf movies that exist and, along with Caddyshack, Sandler's Happy Gilmore may be the very best. It grossed $40 million at the worldwide box office back in the day and has only gotten more popular as time has gone. There would likely be an extremely positive reception to a sequel announcement.

Nothing is set in stone, as McDonald acknowledged in the interview. But it sounds like there's a chance we get a Happy Gilmore 2.
