Alabama's rich sports history goes far beyond what most fans realize, especially when the state isn't home to any franchises of the major team sports.

For example, baseball's Hank Aaron was born and raised in the Mobile area. Willie Mays starred at Fairfield Industrial High School and for the Birmingham Black Barons before signing with the New York Giants in 1950, when he was just 19 years old. Other state legends include Jesse Owens, Bart Starr, Alice Coachman Davis, Bo Jackson and Mia Hamm.

The Hall of Fame list includes greats like Ken Stabler, Derriuck Thomas, John Stallworth, Ozzie Newsome, John Hannah, Joe Namath and Kevin Greene. There's also Charles Barkley, Bobby and Davey Allson, Hubert Green, Rowdy Gaines and even Deontay Wilder.

Many of them have been honored by the Alabama Sports Writers Association, dating back to 1974.
