Alabama Baseball Swept by LSU After High-Scoring Series Finale
It was a back-and-forth offensive affair in the series finale, but the Crimson Tide lost to LSU 13-11 and is the victim of a sweep at the hands of the Tigers.
Alabama got on the board first thanks to a throwing error by the left fielder in the first inning. But LSU had a powerful response in the second inning as Jared Jones hit a two-run home run to give LSU the lead.
Dylan Crews hit another home run in the third inning to give the Tigers an early 3-1 lead.
The Crimson Tide offense then fired off six runs over the next two innings. In the 4th, Ed Johnson hit an RBI double down the line, then Jim Jarvis returned the favor with another RBI double. Andrew Pinckney, who had an overall great weekend in Baton Rouge, drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.
In the 5th inning, Drew Williamson hit a leadoff home run. Then, with two runners on base, Ed Johnson puts the ball in play and the shortstop makes a throwing error, allowing Dom Tamez to score. Mac Guscette then hit a sacrifice fly to cap off what had become a 7-3 lead.
But the lead was short-lived as the pitching had a meltdown in the bottom half of the inning.
With the bases loaded and Hunter Furtado on the mound, LSU hit back-to-back RBI singles to make the score 7-5. Furtado then gave up a walk to force a run home and was relieved by Hunter Hoopes.
Unfortunately the struggles continued as Hoopes also gave up a walk to force home another LSU run. Jared Jones hit another sacrifice fly and Alex Milazzo hit an RBI single before the 5th inning came to an end. When it was over the score was 9-7 LSU.
Both teams added two more runs over the next two innings, but LSU delivered two haymakers in the 8th inning: solo home runs from Jordan Thompson and Paxton Kling.
Seidl made things interesting in the 9th with a two-run home run of his own, but it wasn't enough as Alabama lost the game and the series.
The Tide needed a positive series in the win-loss column, and the offense played well enough for that result, but now Brad Bohannon's squad is back under .500 in SEC play with another tough series coming up against Vanderbilt. The series opener against the Commodores will be on Thursday night in Tuscaloosa. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT.
