Alabama Gymnast Makarri Doggette Out for Season
Alabama will be without once of its most experienced gymnasts and best uneven bars competitors for the rest of the season.
Fifth-year senior Makarri Doggette will miss the remainder of the season Alabama head coach Ashley Johnston revealed on Tuesday.
"Unfortunately, Makarri suffered a season-ending leg injury," Johnston said. "So we're extremely bummed for her, but I really can't say enough about her team-first mentality. I think everybody could see her out there on the scooter even during Power of Pink meet where she was all in and invested."
Doggette's injury was the only damper on an otherwise outstanding night for Alabama gymnastics when the team scored a season-high 198.075 to beat Georgia in the Power of Pink Meet on Friday night. She suffered the injury during warmups prior to the first rotation on vault and did not compete in the meet. However, she came back out in a boot on a scooter for the final two rotations to cheer on her teammates.
Doggette has been a contributor for Alabama since her freshman season in 2020. This season, she had competed for the Crimson Tide in the bars lineup of every meet and on vault four times. She had begun working her way back into the floor lineup, competing exhibition on the floor exercise last week in the quad meet at Texas Women's University. She was the 2021 SEC champion on the uneven bars.
"We've talked all year about depth and the importance of depth, and so this team was ready to handle any challenge that was thrown their way," Johnston said. "You could see that by the way everybody stepped up and contributed in a big way. Having Shania Adams return back in the lineups last week was a big addition, and it really paid off for this team."
Doggette does not have any eligibility left and likely has competed her final routine in a Crimson Tide uniform.
