TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The Alabama basketball squad is geared up and ready to go for its first game of the regular season against the Penn Quakers.

The game marks the dawn of a new era for Crimson Tide basketball, with new head coach Nate Oats at the helm. Oats coached previously at Buffalo, where he had a 96-43 record, three MAC titles and three NCAA Tournament appearances.

Pregame

The starting lineup for the Crimson Tide include Kira Lewis, Jr., Jaden Shackelford, John Petty, Jr., Herb Jones, and Galin Smith. 

Ryan Betley, Jordan Dingle, Devon Goodman, Eddie Scott, and A.J. Brodeur will start for the Quakers. 

First Half

  • Forward Javian Davis is the first sub for the Crimson Tide at the 16:45 mark of the half. Alabama owns an 11-5 advantage. 
  • Guard Beetle Bolden has entered the game for Shackelford. 
  • At the first media timeout, the Crimson Tide lead 11-7 thanks to three-pointers by Petty and Shackelford. 
  • Jones is doing his part on the defensive end with two steals. 
  • Forward Alex Reese has checked into the game for Jones. 
  • Dingle has been the source on offense for the Quakers with five points. 
  • The Quakers have taken the lead, 16-14, with 13:17 to go in the first half, thanks to a three-pointer by Betley. 
  • Bolden puts the Crimson Tide back in front, 17-16, with a three-pointer of his own as they head to the second media timeout of the game. 11:33 left in the opening period. 
  • At the 8:01 mark the game is tied at 22. Jones had a hard fall to the floor after a block attempt and stayed there for a few moments until he got up and walked immediately to the locker room. 
  • Back-to-back three-pointers by Lewis and Shackelford have put the Crimson Tide up 28-22 with 6:39 remaining. 
  • Jones has reappeared from the locker room to take a seat on the bench. This injury is to his left elbow and he is questionable to return. 
  • The Quakers have now tied the game at 33 on a dunk by Brodeur with two minutes to go in the half. 
  • Crimson Tide guard Jaylen Forbes scores his first points of the game on a put back layup to tie the game at 35 as we head to the halftime break. 
  • Shackelford, Bolden, and Lewis are all tied for leading scorer with eight points. 
  • At the break, Reese is leading the Crimson Tide in steals with three. 
  • Defensively, the Crimson Tide are holding the Quakers to an abysmal 26 percent from three-point range.

Second Half

  • A few changes to the starting lineups of the second half including Reese coming in for Jones and for the Quakers, guard Bryce Washington checks in for Brodeur. 
  • Penn has jumped out to a 7-0 run to start the half with 17:18 remaining. 
  • Lewis has stopped the bleeding with a layup to cut the deficit to 43-37. 
  • Davis and Bolden are the first substitutes for the Crimson Tide. 
  • At the 15:44 mark in the game, Penn has a 44-39 advantage. Alabama has sputtered out of the gate in this half, missing five of their first seven shots from the field. 
  • The Crimson Tide have found some life on offense thanks to quick four points from Lewis.
  • Lewis finds Petty in the corner for a three-pointer to cut the Quaker lead to 52-46. 11:59 to go in the game. 
  • Two more layups from Lewis and Shackelford have the Crimson Tide trailing 54-50 with 10:41 remaining. Oats' offense is coming alive, now the defense will need to get some stops.
  • Smith just picked up his fourth foul, sending Brodeur to the free throw line. Brodeur sinks both. 56-50 Penn. 
  • Both of the Crimson Tide big men are in foul trouble. Davis has three. 
  • Jones' absence is being felt as the Quakers have scored on four straight possessions. 63-55 Penn at the 8:41 mark. 
  • The Crimson Tide go into the under eight minute media timeout trailing 66-59. The Quakers will be at the free throw line when we return to action. 
  • Lewis hits two free throws and layup on back to back trips down the court. 
  • After two straight defensive stops, Shackelford attacks the rim for the layup and the foul. Crimson Tide trailing 70-66 with five minutes to go. 
  • Lewis nails a three-pointer and a layup to trim the Quaker lead to one, but Dingle comes back on the other end and hits a three-pointer of his own to move the score to 77-73. 3:11 remaining in the game. 
  • Reese hits two free throws and after two Quaker misses from the line, he comes back on the other end and throws down a monstrous dunk. Tied at 77. 1:39 to go. 
  • Scott hits two from the line to put the Quakers up 79-77. 
  • Oats calls a full timeout with 1:25 remaining. It will be Crimson Tide ball underneath their basket when play resumes. 
  • Petty is called for offensive interference with 52 seconds to go. Coleman Coliseum is not happy after that call. 
  • After Brodeur misses a layup for the Quakers, Shackelford misses a three for the Crimson Tide, but Smith gets a timely rebound back out to Lewis. He drains the three-pointer. Alabama up 80-79 with 15 seconds remaining. 
  • Dingle hits a contested layup to put the Quakers up 81-80. Alabama ball with seven seconds on the clock. 
  • Lewis dribbles the length of the court and is fouled. He will go to the line for two shots. He misses both.
  • Penn holds on to beat Alabama, 81-80.
