Alabama Radio Announcer Eli Gold Hopes to Get Back Calling Games Soon

In a statement released Friday afternoon, Gold said he has been diagnosed with a treatable form of cancer.

The longtime voice of Alabama football shared an update Friday afternoon after missing the entire 2022 season. Eli Gold announced he has been diagnosed with cancer, but hopes to be back calling games for the Crimson Tide soon.

"I want to thank everyone for their well wishes and prayers," Gold said in a statement. "After extensive testing, I have now been diagnosed of a treatable form of cancer. I’m already making progress and hope to get back behind the mic again soon. Roll Tide!"

Gold has been the voice of the Crimson Tide since 1988. His main role has been as the play-by-play man for Alabama football on the Crimson Tide Sports Network, but he has helped out with calling other sports, especially with the advent of the SEC Network and SEC Network+.

Chris Stewart filled in for Gold during the 2022 football season for game broadcasts and on the weekly Hey Coach! show with Alabama head coach Nick Saban.

"Eli has done a fantastic job of being the voice of our iconic brand at the University of Alabama for a long, long time,” Saban said back in August. “Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family, and we certainly hope that he has a speedy recovery.
