Did you notice?
• Nick Saban was asked during the SEC weekly coaches’ teleconference with reporters about former Tennessee coach Butch Jones coming back for a second year as a Crimson Tide analyst. “We’ve had guys do it. I think it’s all relative to what they want to do. I know Butch had job opportunities after last year and he decided he wanted to stay here. It’s obviously an advantage when you have continuity in your program with the people that you have in your organization at any level." As for what he contributes: "Most of the stuff is behind the scenes — film study, doing administrative type work. He always does: What do we need to do on offense for me and his opinion in terms of improving based on film study and things like that. His role has always sort of been that and he’s done a really, really good job of it. He’s a great person and a great guy to have in your organization.”
• Jeremy Pruitt said Tennessee quarterback Brian Maurer, who suffered a concussion in last week's win over Mississippi State, will be a game-time decision for Saturday's game at Alabama.
• Six Alabama programs, including men's basketball team, led the SEC in Graduation Success Rate (GSR) figures released by the NCAA on Wednesday. With an overall GSR of 91, Alabama ranks third among SEC schools. Those with perfect 100s were men’s basketball, men's golf, women's golf, gymnastics, women's swimming and diving and women's tennis. Football scored 85, which was third in the SEC, landing Nick Saban a $100,000 bonus.
• The XFL concluded its inaugural draft with guard Korren Kirven selected by the St. Louis BattleHawks, with both defensive back Bradley Sylve and wide receiver Richard Mullaney by the DC Defenders.
• A day after the midseason AP All-American Team was announced and had only one Alabama first-team selection, wide receiver DeVonta Smith, USA Today’s team was released and included Tua Tagovailoa, Jerry Jeudy and Xavier McKinney.
• After tallying 12 tackles, two pass breakups, a forced fumble and a sack, Washington Redskins safety Landon Collins was named the NFC Defensive Player of the Week.
• We’ll leave you with this …
On this date in Crimson Tide history:
October 17, 1985: John Parker Wilson was born in Montgomery, Ala.
October 17, 2009: During what some thought was his Heisman Trophy moment, Mark Ingram Jr. churned out a career-high 246 yards, many out of a wildcat formation on the decisive drive, and scored the game-clinching touchdown to lead No. 2 Alabama to a 20-6 home victory against No. 22 South Carolina. The Crimson Tide had four turnovers, but scored on a pick-six by Mark Barron.
October 17, 2015: Derrick Henry ran for a career-high 236 yards and two scores, and No. 10 Alabama had a school-record three touchdowns on interception returns for a 41-23 victory at No. 9 Texas A&M. Minkah Fitzpatrick opened and closed the scoring with returns of 33 and 55 yards, respectively, and Eddie Jackson had a 93-yard pick-six.
Crimson Tide quote of the day:
“Last year, I could just chuck it as far as I could and it was either out of bounds or no one caught it, and that was the checkdown. It’s real football now.” — Missouri quarterback Drew Lock after facing Alabama
