Did You Notice?

  • U.S. team captain Stacy Lewis selected former Crimson Tide golfer Cheyenne Knight as one of her captain’s picks for the 2023 Solheim Cup, to be held Sept. 22-24 at Finca Cortesin in Andalucia, Spain. The Solheim Cup is essentially the women's version of the Ryder Cup, biennial tournament featuring teams from the United States and Europe.
  • Nick Dunlap, who will be part of Team USA at the Walker Cup this weekend at St. Andrews, Scotland, will also represent his country in the 2023 World Amateur Team Championships on Oct. 18-21 in Abu Dhabi. The rest of the U.S. contingent will be David Ford and Gordon Sargent.

  • The 2023 season is expected to join 2012 (five rookie quarterbacks] and 2021 (three) as the only seasons since 1970 in which at least three rookie quarterbacks started in Week 1. Carolina rookie quarterback Bryce Young (No. 1 overall in the 2023 NFL Draft), Houston rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud (No. 2) and Indianapolis rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson (No. 4), are each expected to make their first career starts next week. In the common-draft era, 17 quarterbacks have been selected with the first overall pick in the NFL Draft and started in Week I of their rookie season, including three of the past four seasons: Trevor Lawrence (2021), Joe Burrow (2020] and Kyler Murray (2019).
  • Monday was relatively quiet for former Crimson Tide players as NFL teams continued to position themselves for Tuesday's roster cut deadline. They have to get down from the offseason allowance of 90 players to a working roster of 53 by 3 p.m. CT. Check out BamaCentral's Cutdown Day Tracker with the latest moves, even after the deadline passes as teams will be signing free agents and players for practice squads.
  • It's only been one weekend, but volleyball's Vic Schmer leads the NCAA in aces (13) and aces per set (1.62).
  • The last time Alabama hosted Middle Tennessee in football, on Sept. 12, 2015, this was the GameDay program cover:

On This Day in Crimson Tide History:

August 29, 1925: Coach Wallace Wade announced that Captain James "Dink" Hagan, who played for Alabama from 1913-17, had been hired as an assistant coach. Hagan had previously been on the staff at Nebraska. He would also teach ROTC at the university. – Bryant Museum

August 29, 1873: The person who brought the new game of football to the University of Alabama, William G. Little, was born in Sumter County, Ala., near Livingston.

Crimson Tide Quote of the Day:

“Winning isn’t imperative, but coming from behind and getting tougher in the fourth quarter is. I don’t want you to think you have to win, because you don’t. On the other hand, if you can go out there ripping and snorting and having fun by knocking people around, I assure you – you will win.” – Paul W. “Bear” Bryant
