DeMeco Ryans is returning to Houston.

The now-former defensive coordinator of the San Francisco 49ers has agreed to become the next head coach of the Houston Texans', per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Ryans and the Texans had been in negotiations since last week.

Ryans began his career in Houston when the former Alabama linebacker was selected in the second round of the 2006 draft by the Texans. He went on to play six seasons in Houston before finishing his career with four seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles.

While at Houston, Ryans was named the Defensive Rookie of the Year, a first-team All-Pro bid and played in two Pro Bowls.

After his playing career ended, Ryans began his coaching career with San Francisco as a defensive quality control coach in 2017 when Kyle Shanahan took over as the team's head coach. Ryans then served as inside linebackers coach from 2018-2020 before taking over as defensive coordinator in 2021.

Over his two seasons as the team's defensive coordinator, the 49ers defense has been one of the most dominant in the NFL. At the end of the 2022 regular season, San Francisco finished as the NFL's top-ranked defense, No. 1 in yards allowed, No. 1 in points allowed and No. 1 in fewest big plays allowed. The team also finished second in rush yards allowed, second in turnovers forced and fourth in yards per play.
