Former Alabama Track and Field Coach Harvey Glance Dies at 66

Former Olympic gold medalist and 15-year head coach of the Alabama Track and Field program passed away on Monday in Mesa, Ariz.

Former University of Alabama Track and Field coach Harvey Glance passed away on Monday after suffering cardiac arrest earlier in the month, according to reporting by the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer. 

Glance an Alabama native went to Auburn and became a star sprinter in the NCAA and then at the Olympic level. 

He claimed NCAA titles in 1976 in the 60-yard, 100 meter and 200 meter dash. In 1977 he successfully defended his 100 meter title to claim another NCAA championship.

Glance was part of Team USA's 400 meter relay team that took home the gold medal in 1976 and was Olympic team captain in 1980.

He was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 1996 and was named to the top 100 State of Alabama's Greatest Athletes of the 20th Century.

Glance spent time in coaching at both Auburn and Alabama overseeing numerous All-Americans. In 2002 with the Crimson Tide he set his season high with 15 athletes named All-American.

His coaching stretched beyond the NCAA as he also coached Team USA at the 1999 Pan-American Games the 2003 World Championship Team, 2006 World Junior Team and 2008 Olympic Team.

Glance had just finished exercising and was coaching Olympic gold medalist Kirani James at Mesa Community College at the time of his cardiac arrest, according to the Ledger-Enquirer.
