No. 20 Alabama Baseball Stifles Richmond on Opening Day, 12-3
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — A mound gem from starting pitcher Grayson Hitt coupled with red-hot hitting by the Crimson Tide bats were the story of the day as No. 20 Alabama baseball overpowered the Richmond Spiders, 12-3.
In five innings pitched, Hitt surrendered just one run off one hit — an unearned run due to a throwing error by third baseman Colby Shelton — walked three batters and struck out eight. All eight strikeouts by the Spiders were swinging.
Alabama head coach Brad Bohannon was satisfied with Hitt's first outing of the 2023 season.
"I just thought it was a really mature game by our group on both sides of the baseball," Bohannon said. "It starts on the mound. I thought Grayson was outstanding and just had a lot of maturity. His body language, his demeanor, his tempo — really attacked the hitters and got us off to a great start on the mound."
Considering it was opening day, Alabama's lineup was very successful. In total, the Crimson Tide hitters recorded 14 hits and were walked four times. Including three batters hit by pitch, that's 21 baserunners out of 37 at-bats on the afternoon.
Right fielder Andrew Pinckney led the charge for the Crimson Tide, batting 4-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Florida transfer catcher Mac Guscette, who was making his debut for Alabama, also hit 3-for-4 with two runs, four RBI as well as a three-run home run.
"I thought our approach offensively was outstanding," Bohannon said. "[...] Up and down the lineup, a lot of production, a lot of hard contact — a lot of hits on both sides of the field."
On the mound for Alabama, the Crimson Tide utilized four pitchers, including Hitt, Luke Holman, Hunter Furtado and Kaden Woods. Combined, the four pitchers surrendered three runs off four hits, walked three batters and struck out 13 on the afternoon.
Hitt (1-0) was credited with the win on the mound for Alabama, while Brock Weirather (0-1) was saddled with the loss for Richmond.
Up next, the Crimson Tide will take on the Spiders once again on Saturday in Game 2 of the three-game series. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m. CT, with the game being broadcast on SEC Network+.
