No. 2 Alabama Basketball Overcomes, Outlasts Mississippi State 66-63
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — It wasn't pretty, but it got the job done.
No. 2 Alabama basketball was able to overcome and then hold off Mississippi State on Wednesday night, coming back from a seven-point deficit at halftime and beating the Bulldogs 66-63.
Over the course of the game, the Crimson Tide shot just 37 percent (21-of-57) from the floor and a tough 18 percent (5-of-28) from beyond the arc.
"The SEC's a tough league," Alabama coach Nate Oats said after the game. "That team's only won one game in the SEC — you saw how tough it was to get a win. Gotta give a ton of credit to Mississippi State. They came ready to play. I thought they had a great plan. They improved more than we improved from the first time we played them."
Mississippi State jumped out to an early 10-2 lead to start the game, propelled by a layup and a dunk by forward D.J. Jeffries. The Bulldogs jumped out to as much as 11 points ahead of the Crimson Tide, with stout defensive play and a high success rate in the paint keeping them ahead.
At halftime, Alabama trailed Mississippi State 36-29.
The second half was slightly better for the Crimson Tide, and slightly worse for the Bulldogs. Out of the gate, Alabama scored four to cut the Mississippi State lead to three. However, seven Bulldogs points — including a 3-pointer by guard Shakeel Moore — brought the game right back to a 10-point deficit for Alabama.
Over the next seven minutes, Alabama's offense finally got rolling, outscoring Mississippi State 15-3. A 3-pointer by Rylan Griffen at the 9:19 mark gave Alabama a 48-46 lead — the first of the game for the Crimson Tide. Slowly but surely, Alabama crept the lead out to as much as eight points, but a dunk and a layup by Mississippi State cut the Crimson Tide lead to just three points in the final seconds.
A block by Noah Gurley swatted the ball away, with a jumper by Bulldogs guard Eric Reed Jr. missing the mark and giving Alabama the win.
"I give our guys a lot of credit in the second half — they found a way to get a win in a tight game," Oats said. "We haven't had very many tight games so it's not the worst that we had to figure out how to win a close game — especially when you're down."
Three Alabama players shot in double-digits, with Jahvon Quinerly leading the team with 14 points. Noah Clowney and Brandon Miller tied for second-most points on the team with 13 apiece. Clowney also lead the team in rebounds with eight, followed by Miller with six.
Dom Welch was the only player for the Crimson Tide to record multiple 3-pointers, finishing the night shooting 2-for-3 from beyond the arc.
With the win, Alabama moves to 18-2 overall and is 8-0 in SEC play. Mississippi State, on the other hand, falls to 12-8 with the loss and is 1-7 in SEC play. Up next, the Crimson Tide will travel to Norman, Okla., on Saturday to take on the Oklahoma Sooners in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge (1 p.m. CT, ESPN).
