Injury Updates for Alabama Football Heading into Spring Practice
TUSCALOOSA, Ala— Nick Saban spoke to the media for the first time as spring practice gets underway, but the Alabama head coach shared some injury news involving several Crimson Tide players.
Saban said that linebackers Deontae Lawson and Dallas Turner have been ruled out for the spring completely. Both players had surgeries and should be fine moving forward.
Running back Roydell Williams and DeVonta Smith are also dealing with injuries but are expected to return at some point.
Tight end Robbie Outzs and defensive linemen Jah-Marien Latham and Justin Eboigbe will participate on a limited basis in practice, but none of them will likely play in the spring game on April 22.
In terms of severity, Eboigbe missed most of last season after suffering a neck injury, so the timeline for his return has been a conservative one. That said, Eboigbe has shared messages on social media indicating that the trend is positive, including a tweet he posted on March 9.
Roydell Williams and Dallas Turner's injuries provide a level of intrigue as both players are in competition to be the starter for next season. Turner's injury means that several players will have a chance to take more reps in the spring. The same thing goes for Lawson, who saw a lot of time in a reserve role last season.
Williams' injury isn't as severe, but running back is always a competitive position. That is the case this spring even if you don't include Jase McClellan, who shared snaps with Jahmyr Gibbs last season.
A lot of people are excited to see what Jam Miller would do in a larger role; Justice Haynes will certainly challenge for snaps as a true freshman; and Richard Young, once he gets on campus, will be another player to keep everyone else on their toes.
