Of all the position battles going on within Alabama football, the most intriguing one is the quarterback. As it stands, the successor to Bryce Young will either be Jalen Milroe or Ty Simpson. But a report about Notre Dame quarterback Tyler Buchner could make the battle more interesting.

Buchner, who threw for 651 yards and three touchdowns as a sophomore in 2022 for the Fighting Irish, has entered the transfer portal. The immediate thought arose that he could be reunited with Tommy Rees, who just left Notre Dame to become Alabama's offensive coordinator.

But the intrigue went a step further with a report coming out that Buchner is expected to visit the Crimson Tide.

While the quarterback battle is still wide open, it felt pretty certain that either Milroe or Simpson would become the next starter. But with the potential addition of another quarterback to the mix, what does that mean for the incumbents?

Remember that Buchner was Notre Dame's starter before injuring his shoulder, and he would have the advantage of being more familiar with Rees' system. There is also the factor that Buchner has entered the portal with a willingness to return to Notre Dame.

There are a lot of variables at play, but if Buchner ends up transferring to Alabama, that will raise a lot of alarms about the guys that are already here. That's on top of the pressure of improving after how last season ended. Time will tell as to whether or not those thoughts become reality.
