Bama in the NFL: John Hannah was Punishing for New England Patriots
There was domination, and then there was John Hannah with the New England Patriots.
Hannah was a fierce competitor with good footwork, but didn't just hit defenders, he punished them. Even though Hannah retired in 1985, he still has the reputation for being one of the NFL's hardest hitters.
Some believe he was the best offensive lineman to ever play the game. The fourth-overall selection in 1973 draft, Hannah spent his entire professional career with the New England Patriots. He was named All-Pro seven times, and was a second-team selection another three. Additionally, he was selected for the Pro Bowl nine times.
Other honors included being one of the few players named to an NFL All-Decade Team twice, for the 1970s and 1980s. He was also the top guard listed on the NFL 75th Anniversary All-Time Team in 1994, and also was also selected for the NFL’s 100th-anniversary team.
Consequently, Hannah's induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame was a no-brainer, and the Patriots retired his No. 73.
Paul Bryant once said of Hannah, “In over 30 years with the game, he’s the finest offensive lineman I’ve ever been around.”
“Coach Bryant left for me a lesson of setting lofty goals,” Hannah said. “And not only that but to run life’s race to reach those goals. The greatest lesson that he left with me was that you have to beat your body, you got to make it your slave if you ever want to get where you want to go.”
The other Patriots player who obviously stands out is linebacker Dont'a Hightower, who also suited up for just one NFL team. From 2012-21 (he sat out the covid-2020 season), the linebacker participated in 117 games (114 starts) and was credited with 569 tackles, including 43 for a loss and 27 sacks. Hightower was a key defensive part to four New England teams that reached the Super Bowl.
