Former Alabama Standout Patrick Surtain II Named NFL's Top Cornerback
The debate for top cornerback in the NFL changes from year to year, with perennial names like Jalen Ramsey, Jaire Alexander and Darius Slay always involved in the conversation.
In the modern era of football, a new generation of corners has taken over the game, with Trevon Diggs, Sauce Gardner and Jaycee Horn headlining a new generation of cornerbacks.
One cornerback has separated himself above all the others though.
Former Alabama CB Patrick Surtain II was named the top CB by execs, coaches, and scouts across the league in an annual preseason survey by ESPN.
"Complete corner: physical, technical, versatile," a high-ranking NFL official said. "He's a true matchup guy vs. the best players. Premium ability on press or off coverage. Outstanding open-field tackler. Solid ball skills. Plays with confidence. Really, really smart. He plays disciplined so he doesn't give anything away."
Surtain finished the 2022 season with 60 total tackles, one forced fumble, two interceptions, and 10 passes defended. It was also noted that Surtain had a target rate of just 12.5%, which was the lowest of all cornerbacks with at least 201 snaps per ESPN. He also was named to the Pro Bowl as the only Bronco from the 2022 team.
Former NFL players also recognize Surtain as the top corner of the league — with the father of division rival Asante Samuel Jr. giving credit to his son's AFC West counterpart:
One AFC scout noted, "He's separated himself, and I don't think it's close. If you're picking a team, you're taking him first."
Surtain is primed for a major jump in 2023, continuing his new reign as perhaps the top CB in the NFL. The Denver Broncos are poised to be a top defensive team led by their young superstar, and Surtain is entering a season where he can begin negotiations on a contract extension. Alexander currently makes $21 million per year with $30 million fully guaranteed.
Two other former Alabama cornerbacks made an appearance on the list with Marlon Humphrey at No. 6 and Trevon Diggs at No. 8.
