Alabama Baseball HC Rob Vaughn Gives Update on Dylan Lonergan

Rob Vaughn addressed whether two sports are still in the cards for one Crimson Tide athlete.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Despite enrolling early at Alabama, Crimson Tide quarterback Dylan Lonergan did not play baseball as a right-handed pitcher last spring. On Friday, first-year Alabama head coach Rob Vaughn provided an update as to whether two sports are still in the cards for the Snellville, Ga., product.

"There's been a lot of changes over the last few weeks [in the football program]," Vaughn said. "It's been very well documented what those changes are. Dylan, right now, I think is going to focus on what he's got going at football. He's extremely talented."

Associate head coach and longtime pitching coach Jason Jackson has seen Lonergan in action and loves him. He was one of the better high school baseball players in his native Georgia, intending on participating in both sports collegiately. However, plans often change. He has one regular season football game under his belt to date, completing two passes against Chattanooga on Nov. 18.

Vaughn did not unequivocally rule out an eventual return to the diamond for the young signal caller, instead leaving it up to Lonergan. "What that means for him moving forward long-term, that's gonna be up to Dylan a lot, and kinda seeing where that shakes out.

"We would love to have him a part of what we're doing, no doubt. I think he's a talented kid, but as of right now, he's gonna focus on what's in front of him. That's a testament to who he is and what he's really earned over the last six, seven months over at that football field." Lonergan is not expected to be around "a ton," but would be welcomed by Vaughn anytime.
