Alabama Baseball Super Regional Game 1 Delayed by 'Non-Game Related Medical Event'
When noon ET (11 a.m. CT), the scheduled start time for Alabama baseball's opening game at the Winston-Salem Super Regional, arrived Saturday, there was no game action. The start to the contest was delayed by over two hours owing to unexpected circumstances.
Unfortunately, a medical emergency among broadcast personnel was the cause of the delay.
Fans were not admitted to the David F. Couch Ballpark until minutes after noon. Details were scarce at the time. The team accounts specified that gates hadn't opened owing to a "non-game related medical event." No official update followed.
The game was originally set to be broadcast on ESPN but it was subsequently shifted to ESPN+ for a new 1:15 p.m. CT start time. The official time of the game was delivered around the time fans and other personnel were officially let into the venue.
ESPN said it was still gathering information related to the incident. Beyond that, the network had not updated its communications on the issue as of this writing.
Alabama and Wake Forest are playing a three-game series with spot in the Men's College World Series in Omaha, Neb., on the line. The Demon Deacons are the top-seeded in the NCAA Tournament, while the Crimson Tide is No. 16.
