The Extra Point: New Alabama Basketball Uniforms

Should the new Alabama basketball uniforms be here to stay?
In this story:

The No. 13 Alabama men’s basketball team debuted new uniforms last Saturday against Texas A&M. Initially unveiled earlier in the week to much fanfare on social media and beyond, the uniforms were met with a continued positive reception once they officially hit the floor. In the game itself, the Crimson Tide put up a 100-spot on the Aggies, remaining atop the standings in the SEC.

Team accounts indicated later in the weekend that the uniforms, in the works well before their debut appearance, were now retired after just one on-court showing. This is in spite of the fact that there was a convincing win in a matchup Alabama has struggled with over the course of recent seasons. How much of that is owed to the gameday apparel is, of course, debatable. It stands to reason that owing to the fan response, not to mention the fact that the players liked them, the new threads should stick around. Some even want the program to make them permanent or have them be worn for multiple home games per season.

Alternate uniforms have been a topic of discussion for a long time among the Alabama fan community and are rare in basketball. Memories were jogged of the gray-clad Crimson Tide defeating Auburn at home early in the Anthony Grant era. The women’s basketball team has alternates for Power of Pink contests. Despite playing in the PK85 in 2022, the Crimson Tide men’s team did not wear a new uniform. The PK80, played in 2017, featured specially designed threads for participating teams.
