Will Reichard Breaks NCAA's Career Scoring Record
ATLANTA, Ga.— He did it.
One week after tying the NCAA career scoring record during the Iron Bowl, veteran Alabama placekicker and fan favorite Will Reichard now has sole possession of the mark.
He passed former Navy Midshipmen quarterback Keenan Reynolds (2012-15), whose dazzling offense previously put him at the top of the scoring list with 530 career points, on Saturday afternoon in the SEC Championship Game.
A 43-yard field goal on the No. 8 Crimson Tide's first scoring drive against No. 1 Georgia sealed the deal, surging him past the magic number: 531 points. Reichard has 533.
He's been within striking distance of the honor for some time, taking over second place before eventually tying Reynolds. Second place previously belonged to former Louisiana Tech tailback Kenneth Dixon, whose collegiate career spanned the same time frame as Reynolds'.
Reichard, who returned for a fifth year after initially opting to go pro, had an opportunity to take the record for himself last weekend against the Tigers, instead missing a third-quarter kick and notching his final score of that game on the extra point that followed Jalen Milroe's game-winning touchdown pass to Isaiah Bond. His pursuit of the all-time mark has been closely followed by Crimson Tide fans.
Absent his three missed field goal attempts this season (two against Tennessee, one against Auburn), he would already have had the record prior to the Crimson Tide's bid for an SEC title inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Either way, his return to the Capstone has paid off in spades.
