No. 10 Alabama Softball Shuts Out UAB, Sweeps Green & Gold Classic

Team 28 leaves the Magic City with five more wins under its belt.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- 16-0.

That is the record of the No. 10 Alabama Crimson Tide softball team after beating the UAB Blazers 15-0 on Sunday afternoon at Mary Bowers Field to sweep the Green & Gold Classic.

Abby Duchscherer was the star of the game, going 3-for-4 at the plate with a home run in the first inning, a double in the second, and a single in the third as well as batted in five runs.

As a whole, the team recorded 13 hits in 28 at-bats and received run support in every inning except the fourth. In the first, Kali Heivilin hit an RBI single. In the second, a hat trick of hits added to Alabama’s lead with back-to-back RBI singles by Jenna Johnson and Kenleigh Cahalan. In the third inning, Cahalan brought in two runs with a double and Kendal Clark and Marlie Giles both hit solo home runs after coming in to pinch hit. In the fifth, Giles capped off the scoring with a two-run home run, marking the highest score of the season for the Crimson Tide.

Jaala Torrence started in the circle for the Crimson Tide, her second start and fourth appearance on the weekend. Torrence continued her impressive senior campaign as she pitched two innings, allowed one hit, and struck out four batters. Alea Johnson and Alex Salter came into the game in relief, allowing two hits and three strikeouts combined. 

How it Happened:

  • A groundout ends the inning and Alabama wins 15-0. 
  • Alex Salter comes in for relief of Johnson in the fifth inning. 
  • Marlie Giles hits a 2-run home run in the top of the fifth inning. This is the most runs the Crimson Tide has scored in a single game this season. Alabama 15, UAB 0. 
  • UAB goes down in order to end the fourth inning. 
  • The Crimson Tide left two runners stranded on base in the top of the fourth inning. 
  • Alea Johnson comes in to the game in relief of Jaala Torrence in the bottom of the third inning. 
  • Kendal Clark comes in to pinch hit for Riley Valentine and hits a two-run home run to left-center field. Marlie Giles comes into pinch hit next and hits a solo shot to right-center field. Alabama 13, UAB 0. 
  • Abby Duchscherer hits a 2-RBI single to extend the Crimson Tide's lead in the top of the third. Duchscherer is a triple away from the cycle. Alabama 10 UAB 0.
  • Kenleigh Cahalan hits a 2-RBI double in the top of the third inning. Two batters are on and nobody is out. Alabama 8, UAB 0. 
  • UAB goes down in order to end the second inning. Torrence strikes out two batters, putting her total at four on the day. 
  • The Crimson Tide adds two more runs to the board on two consecutive hits. The first was an RBI single by Kenleigh Cahalan and the second was an RBI double by Duchscherer. Alabama 6,  UAB 0. 
  • Jenna Johnson hits an RBI single and advances to third on the play. Kristen White scores, but is shaken up on the play after a collision with UAB's catcher. Alabama 4, UAB 0. 
  • The Blazers make a pitching change in the top of the second inning. Olivia Cummings is coming into the game in relief. Kristen White is on first base after drawing a leadoff walk.
  • UAB gets two base runners in the bottom of the first from an error by Duchscherer and a single by Blazer's Olivia Valbak, but a line out ends the inning with no damage. 
  • Kali Heivilin hits an RBI double to bring in an additional run, however a groundout by Larissa Preuitt ends the top of the first. Alabama 3, UAB 0. 
  • Abby Duchscherer gets Alabama on the board early with a two-run home run to center field in the top of the first inning. Alabama 2, UAB 0. 
  • Jaala Torrence is starting in the circle for the Crimson Tide. This is Torrence's second start in the event (Friday), however she has pitched every day this weekend with two relief outings on Saturday. 
  • First pitch between Alabama and UAB is set for 11:05 a.m. CT.
