Would you believe me if I told you that it’s Arizona State athletics department that is directly behind Stanford for most teams recognized by the NCAA for their high 2018-19 Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores with a total of 12 teams finishing in the top 10 percent? That’s right, ASU is second in the Pac 12, right behind Stanford’s 16 teams.

The NCAA APR has been used to gauge Division I sports team’s academic achievement for the past 15 years. The APR tracks each semester’s academic progress for each student athlete on scholarship, accounting for eligibility, retention, and graduation, and provides a team’s academic performance.

The NCAA announced this week that Arizona State University recorded a multiyear APR average of 993 over a four year period which includes 2015-2016 to 2018-2019 which also is an all time high for Arizona State University.

For the 2018-2019 school year, ASU’s overall APR score was 993, which is the highest score in Sun Devil history. The national multiyear APR score for al of NCAA Division 1 programs is 983.

12 Sun Devil teams earned APR scores in the top 10 percent, the NCAA announced.

The 12 teams that achieved this feat are:

men's and women's basketball, beach volleyball, women's cross country, men's and women's golf, gymnastics, soccer, women's swimming and diving, men's and women's tennis, and women's water polo.

This marks a new stretch for men’s basketball. They were third overall and first since 2015-2016.

“Sun Devil Athletic teams continue to vigorously compete for the top ranking in the Pac-12 for balancing the academic and athletic pursuit," Deputy Athletic Director and Chief of Staff Jean Boyd said. "We have once again achieved an all time high with 12 teams in the top-10 percent of all of college athletics for APR scores. We are determined to prepare balanced, well-rounded leaders who will impact our world and this recognition is evidence of our progress."

It’s no surprise that right below the Sun Devils is Cal. ASU is sandwiched between two teams that have historically excelled and take pride in their academic excellence. Not only is ASU number one in innovation, but they continue to prioritize studies as well as their athletic performance. It seems to me that the Sun Devils are embracing the well balanced approach to what it means to be a leader.. one who soars in the class room and out of it. Congratulations to all of the teams. The sky is the limit for the Sun Devils.
