Former Hog Ready to Offer Orioles Extra Pop
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — A former Hog is on his way to Baltimore as the Orioles promote right-fielder Heston Kjerstad to the big-league roster for the first time, as first reported by Andy Kostka of the Baltimore Banner.
Kjerstad spent 3 years on the hill, playing in 150 games in a Razorback uniform. He also finished seventh all-time in career home runs at Arkansas with 37. The outfielder also racked up 2018 SEC Freshman of the Year and was named Second-team All-SEC for both 2018 and 2019.
After being drafted the No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 draft, Kjerstad was dealt a rough hand. He spent the majority of the time trying to recover from heart inflammation.
He rebounded this year, putting up massive numbers in the Minor Leagues. Kjerstad has 58 extra-base hits in 479 at-bats across two levels (AA Bowie and AAA Norfolk), including 21 homers. The newly minted Major Leaguer was overcome with emotion ahead of his debut and is ready to contribute to manager Brandon Hyde's team in whatever way he can.
Kjerstad is expected to split time between right field and designated hitter for the Orioles. He was not in the starting lineup for the series opener against the Rays Thursday night.
