FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — There may be a lot riding on performances in Saturday morning's private scrimmage inside Razorback Stadium for some players. We just don't really know.

There are still questions about rotations at several positions. We've hard every assistant coach have glowing things to say about the available talent. How it's playing out in scrimmages will probably remain a mystery for awhile.

The season opener at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock against Western Carolina may give Razorbacks coach Sam Pittman and his staff a few answers. To be honest, we have little to base any decisions on except what the coaches tell us. Sorry, I prefer to see how players do when somebody is keeping score.

That first game will probably be little more than a scrimmage with fans in the stands and however many people watching the live stream on ESPN+. If someone doesn't perform well it will point to a problem, but no one will likely have a solid grasp on what the true strengths and weaknesses on this team until after the Razorbacks head to Baton Rouge to play LSU on Sept. 23.

BYU the week before may give a better read, but they are not an SEC team and what really matters is what happens in the league play. The SEC opener will likely be in against a highly ranked Tigers team backed by a hostile crowd.

About the only secure positions for the Hogs are quarterback, running back and kicker. Everything else has a lot of projections based on what we've seen in practices and this year that's been extremely limited. Being recruited as SEC talent, they can all perform individual drills well, so not a lot is getting revealed.

Pittman's press conference around noon will carefully chosen information and little more. We'll get to talk to quarterback KJ Jefferson, who was a no-show at his last scheduled press appearance for whatever reason Thursday morning after practice. He's not very good at giving away anything, either. It's one of the many things he's learned over five seasons..

Like the rest of us, you'll just have to wait and see how it all plays out. We'll have video and stories at allHOGS. Just don't expect an awful lot of answers to all the questions on the field.
