Former Razorbacks Coach Returns to On-field Role in Texas
SAN MARCOS, Texas — Former Arkansas coach Chad Morris has taken on a new role as wide receivers coach at Texas State, per Football Scoop. This comes after Morris spent last season as a 'special assistant to the head coach' for Clemson's Dabo Swinney.
The former Texas high school football coach will also be the passing game coordinator. Morris will replace Craig Stutzman, who took the offensive coordinator role at San Jose State under new new head coach Ken Niumatalolo. With 16 seasons as a high school coach, Morris went 169-38 overall. Two seasons before jumping to college football were spent with powerhouse Lake Travis going 32-0 and back-to-back state titles before moving to the college ranks.
The Bobcats program is considered one on the rise in the Sunbelt Conference under GJ Kinne. Tulsa's former quarterback led his team to a school record 8-5 season and first bowl win. Morris was Kinne's offensive coordinator during the 2010 season which saw the Golden Hurricane's star passer throw the No. 11 most yards in college football with 3,650. Kinne also passed for 36 touchdowns ranking No. 9 in the country.
Kinne began his coaching career when hired as a graduate assistant under Morris at SMU. He would follow him to Arkansas where he spent one season in the same role in 2018. The Philadelphia Eagles hired Kinne in 2019 as an offensive special projects assistant. After one season the professional ranks, Kinne returned to college as Hawaii's offensive coordinator.
Since his termination at Arkansas, Morris has bounced around in several different roles most notably as Auburn's offensive coordinator in 2020, which resulted in the firing of Arkansas native Gus Malzahn. He spent one season with Allen (Texas) High School during the 2021 season and played a role in having the team's 80+ game home winning streak snapped.
Prior to his arrival at the football national powerhouse, the Eagles went 123-6 in nine seasons. Allen went 11-3 in Morris' lone season and has yet to recover, going 27-12 since the former Arkansas coach first set foot on campus.
During 2022, he served a stint with the South Florida program which finished with a single victory.
