Former Hog's Super Bowl Ends in Heartbreaking Fashion
LAS VEGAS Nev. — Dre Greenlaw's exit from the Super Bowl was about as embarrassing as anybody has ever experienced. After jumping up and down to go back into the game in the first half, he fell to the ground a couple of yards from the San Francisco sideline. The former Arkansas linebacker obviously knew it was over. Falling down without being touched just makes it worse.
The result was a non-contact Achilles injury while jogging back onto the field in an error-filled first half against the Kansas City Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes. The halftime ended 10-3, but the penalties and fumbles from both teams made the entire game have a strange vibe. Having one of your top pass defending linebackers go down makes it even tougher in the second half.
A medical golf cart was rolled out and Greenlaw was taken off the field to the locker room in tears and officially ruled out for the remainder of the game. After getting headlines throughout the week for his story just getting there, he was hoping to have a big game, but never really got the chance.
The former Fayetteville High School product had 18 combined tackles in the playoffs including three in the early stages of Super Bowl LVIII and two interceptions. Greenlaw had a game-sealing pick of Packers quarterback Jordan Love to send the team to the NFC Championship.
The 49ers led the Chiefs 10-3 at halftime and the defense will take the field first in the second half without Greenlaw.
