Nothing to Question on Decommit Unless Other Soon Follow
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The guy Arkansas coach Sam Pittman was most relieved to hear about on the early signing day is now gone.
Ashton Bethel-Roman apparently had a change of heart or a better offer somewhere else. A player getting out of his deal now is not any cause for concern. Those things happen.
These kinds of random things happen. There may even be another one or two. In this day and age of transfer portal and NIL, we probably should actually expect it. If it gets to three soon, there may be questions.
Bethel-Roman was a 4-star receiver from Missouri City, Texas, Ridge Point. He had committed to the Razorbacks, but Pittman was on pins and needles on the early signing day back in December waiting to get his signed letter of intent.
"We were on a golf cart (before entering the press conference) and I just needed a thumbs up," Pittman told the media. "Speed, speed. Great kid, great family, but I think he ran a 21.3 or something like that in the 200 meters, something close to that. Obviously we all know we like speed, Bobby (Petrino) loves speed. So we went out and got him."
Now they've got to replace him and getting the wide receivers is becoming an issue. Count Missouri in the chase for Bethel-Roman. He would be another Razorbacks' recruit Eli Drinkwitz has swept up for the Tigers if they pull it off. He flipped Courtney Crutchfield from Pine Bluff back in December.
That is a cause for concern. Petrino's offense requires good receivers and a few of those guys need elite speed. To compete in the SEC, rounding up DII and FCS players every year probably isn't going to work well.
