Reporters Jump Gun on Jefferson in Epic Record Scratch Moment
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – In what was to be the least shocking news development of the day so far, reports came out that Arkansas quarterback KJ Jefferson will enter the transfer portal. Or at least that's what everyone thought.
See, all these people who jumped the gun forgot one thing. It's not their decision. It's up to Jefferson, and the variables to be considered have changed with the hiring of Petrino. In what might be the second biggest record scratch in college football next to yesterday's Arkansas offensive coordinator news, Jefferson let the world know the reporters claiming he is in the portal were wrong.
It has been presumed for quite some time Jefferson would leave after it became clear he wasn't going to have the season under Dan Enos that would propel him to NFL draft status. Jefferson spent most of the year getting pounded and his body language told a tale of a man who would have loved to be anywhere else for much of the season.
While his number of times sacked soared to career highs, his production totals dropped to career lows as a starter. Jefferson's sack totals reached the 40s and the sheer number of hits he took became laughable behind a poor offensive line. As for his personal production, despite breaking numerous school records, he finished with roughly 700 few yards of offense than his past two seasons.
Despite still mulling the decision, there are already predictions that he will go to South Carolina to help salvage Dowell Loggains' run as Gamecocks' offensive coordinator if he does go. However, with Jeff Lebby taking over at Mississippi State, then firing his offensive coordinator, the Bulldogs might have a chance to land Jefferson should Lebby decide to keep it in the family and bring in brother-in-law Kendal Briles after things didn't pan out so well this season at TCU.
Still, according to Jefferson, it's not worth taking the time to think about right now. He's still weighing his options with Pittman and Petrino. When he's ready to let the people of Arkansas know what he's going to do, he will likely let them know himself.
