Razorbacks' Hunter Yurachek's Column Writing Draws Quick Response
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — It didn't take long for Arkansas athletics director Hunter Yurachek to learn how quick responses can be these days when you write a column. He found that out with a guest editorial in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, apparently over the weekend.
From the excerpts I've seen online (and that's a confession that I haven't read the complete piece), Yurachek was absolutely right. There were no guardrails put in place on this whole name, image and likeness thing. Now he's wanting someone to help after seeing what he may have suspected, that it would go careening into wild things without limits.
ESPN basketball analyst Jay Bilas, who has argued for years about the extremely large dollars flying around in all of college sports these days, building new extravagant facilities and payrolls that exceeded the wildest imaginations of those of us watching the sports scene 45 years ago. He fired off a social media post directed at Yurachek, who wasted little time responding.
Maybe the most interesting thing in all this is I see both sides of the argument here. With more facts, I honestly have formed an opinion which way I'm coming down on the whole deal. The only thing I know is college sports will discover Congress has shown a lot of proficiency at not accomplishing anything with any speed. Also, throw in there are no guarantees it will be upheld in the courts. I'm not sure it's something the federal government can tell states how to do, either. Again, the courts and lawyers are guaranteed to get involved if there's any sort of restrictions on players.
It's pretty easy to understand Yurachek's point of view. His job is as much financial as it is trying to root the teams to wins and championships. Maybe the most impressive thing is he doesn't appear to stick his nose into how the coaches run their teams until they don't win at the level he wants. Then he fires them.
