Now Hogs Have Open Spot, What's Eric Musselman Going to Do?
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Multiple media reports put the word out Friday that transfer guard Keyon Menifield will be a non-scholarship player. If this is accurate, it means the ever-changing Arkansas roster may not be completely finished.
Coach Eric Musselman has turned this into a near-art form the last few years and it probably shouldn't be out of the realm of possibility he would add a player so late in the summer. In fact, the more you think about it with Musselman, it actually makes sense.
Either he thinks he can add another really late transfer off the radar of those who track flow in and out of the portal, or a bring in a late high school transfer, which probably is doubtful considering we'd all know about it and there hasn't appeared to be a lot of long-range signees under Musselman.
Menifield has reportedly been on campus participating in summer workouts with the Razorbacks. He is expected to remain enrolled and practice with the team next season. At Washington last year, Menifield got Pac-12 All-Freshman Team honors after averaging 10 points, 3.1 assists, 2.9 rebounds and 1.1 steals per game. He led all the freshmen in the league with a 1.8 turnover to assist ratio, 41 percent from the field, 33 percent on 35 made three-pointers and just under 70 percent at the free-throw line.
Getting minutes in the Hogs' backcourt this year was going to be tough with returning guards Davonte Davis and Joseph Pinion to go with the transfer additions of El Ellis (Louisville), Khalif Battle (Temple), Tramon Mark (Houston), Jeremiah Davenport (Cincinnati) and highly-ranked incoming freshman Layden Blocker.
Now we just get to wait and see what happens with this Hogs' roster. We've come to expect a juggling roster under Musselman, but seldom this late. Haven't heard a word about anything, but it does make you wonder a little bit, doesn't it?
