Players from Arkansas Not Being Hogs Nothing Really New
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — So many basketball players left Arkansas for the that never played for the main team in the state it's probably impossible to make a complete list. Regardless of the amount of success they had.
These days everybody tracks these things with the transfer portal. It's created full-time jobs in some areas. How they do it is beyond me because somebody's going somewhere nearly every day. There are windows for it to be done, but players take to social media and announce it, essentially leaving their team hanging.
But it's not really new. Coaches have basically run players off by helping them transfer or quietly getting them to leave for 50 years. A lot of people think signing a scholarship is a guaranteed four-year deal when it's actually year-to-year. Read one closely.
On the other hand, the Razorbacks haven't always rounded up the best high school players in the state. Take that one back for a long, long time. That includes the four Jones boys from Tillar. Wil (yes, that is the correct spelling), Caldwell, Charles and Major all went to Albany State in Georgia and played a long time in the NBA. They looked good enough in high school to be ready to step on an NBA floor.
Eddie Sutton once ran off guard Keith Hilliard after one season following his transfer to the Hogs. Sutton also couldn't convince future NBA players Michael Cage and Keith Lee to move from West Memphis to Fayetteville. Cage went to San Diego State, while Lee crossed the river to play for Memphis State.
It's happened to every coach. Nolan Richardson watched as Arkansas high school players crossed the border to Ole Miss, including Keith Carter, the Rebels athletics director now. They gave him a few headaches and upset wins over some of Nolan's better teams.
All the way to Mike Anderson, who couldn't land Archie Goodwin from Sylvan Hills or Malik Monk from Bentonville (after one of those high school transfers from over in East Arkansas).
All of those guys went on to success somewhere else, including the NBA.
It led us here at allHOGS to start putting together a list of high school players who have gone to other colleges, especially big schools, or transferred out. If there is a comprehensive list, you can let us know at @allhogswps on the Twitter or allhogs on Facebook.
