After Earning More Playing Time, Ford Now Lands SEC Honor
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Razorback fans may have picked up on the expanded role freshman guard Derrian Ford has started to find himself in with this Arkansas team as the Hogs have drifted into repeated must-win territory.
Over two minutes against Florida. Over two minutes against Georgia.
Suddenly nearly nine minutes against Tennessee as Eric Musselman has noticed something in the former Magnolia Panther that has the fiery coaching relying on Ford even in crucial moments lately.
Now the SEC offices in Birmingham are starting to take notice of Ford.
It came down Thursday morning that Ford was named to the 25th anual SEC Men’s Basketball Community Service Team.
Instead of turning sour as he has worked to increase his minutes with this Razorback team, Ford his used it as a teachable moment.
Literally.
Ford is an education major, and in keeping with that direction, he has chosen to selflessly give in areas that align with that mission.
He has not only worked with the Extra Yard for Teachers. Ford has also sought out charity opportunities that show a heart for kids that is so necessary to holding up in the teaching profession for any extended period of time.
To help develop this trait, he works with several children’s charities such as the First Tee Golf Event, the Children's Safety Center – which empowers children to overcome abuse; the Yvonne Richardson Center Bike Giveaway – which gave away 100 bikes over two days; the Miracles and Magic Radiothon for NWA Children's Hospital – which helped kids and their families access to the best pediatric care.
With such a commitment to helping children while keeping up with classes and his basketball schedule, it's easy to see how the honor fell to Ford.
