FAYETTEVILLLE, Ark. — It’s not even March and Arkansas coach Eric Musselman and his staff are already calculating potential transfers on the market. Macalester College (St. Paul, Minnesota) guard Caleb Williams is a D3 star looking to move up in competition following his redshirt junior campaign.

In case you’re wondering, the NCAA allows programs to contact players at any point as long as they are in the portal. However, players can only enter the portal at this point if they’re a graduate transfer, if their coach was fired, etc. All players can enter the portal on March 18 when the window opens.

The 6-foot-2 guard is a career 42% shooter from the field, knocking down 37% of his three point attempts and dependable from stripe at 81%. Williams fights for rebounds pulling in five per game throughout his career, two assists and one steal. He’s scored 1,058 points the past two seasons averaging 21 points an outing.

During a preseason exhibition this season, Macalestar was hosted by Big Ten squad Minnesota. The Gophers defeated their in-state D3 foe, 97-73, but Williams did pour 41 points, knocking down 14-of-31 shots, 5-of-12 from three and 8-of-10 from the free throw line.

Williams has heard from the Razorbacks, Washington, UNC Wilmington, Western Kentucky, Iona, UW-Green Bay, UC Davis, Wyoming, Chattanooga, Furman and New Mexico State. There are three certainties in life. Death, taxes and Arkansas contacting a transfer.

No program in college basketball takes the transfer portal as serious as the Hogs do. Musselman designates an assistant, likely a graduate assistant or student manager to monitor the portal for any intriguing prospect that fits the Razorback mold.

Arkansas brought in seven transfers who are now starting to mesh together late in the season. Prior to this season, since becoming the coach at Arkansas in 2019, Musselman has never added more than five transfers in a class.

It’ll be interesting to see who the Hogs retain throughout the offseason. With players like Makhi Mitchell, Khalif Battle, El Ellis, Deinjay Harris, Chandler Lawson, Jalen Graham and Jeremiah Davenport all running out of eligibility after the season, at least eight slots could be open if junior forward Trevon Brazile decides to enter the 2024 NBA Draft.

While a D3 player like Williams probably goes elsewhere, Arkansas continuing to be active in the recruiting market for transfers is promising for the future of Razorback basketball. Adding experienced players to play alongside players the caliber of incoming Isaiah Eliohim and Jalen Shelley will be intriguing to watch develop during the offseason.
