No Quarterback Competition This Spring with Green’s Solid Performance
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Boise State transfer Taylen Green looked the part of a vintage Bobby Petrino quarterback during Saturday’s spring game. Although a performance like that can be analyzed to pieces, it showed he might can get it done at the Power Four conference level.
Green completed 17-of-22 passes for 243 yards and three touchdowns through the air. His playmaking ability probably solidified everything heard in press conferences this spring that Green is the guy.
The 6-foot-6, 225 pound passer showed plenty of zip on his throws with added tight spirals. Throws were often on time and rarely overthrown. Accuracy issues from his days with the Broncos at least looked cleaned up compared to just a few months ago.
"Taylen Green is our quarterback," Pittman said. "After that, I think it’s a wide open race. I’m not saying any of them can’t go get Taylen. He’ll work hard to keep his position, but between the four of them, we still have to wait and see.”
Similar to former quarterback KJ Jefferson, Green will also extend plays with his legs. Since Pittman prefers to run an RPO system, it could allow new offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino the chance at a versatile offense with a quarterback who can run a 4.4 40 yard dash.
“Some of [Green’s] runs could have been a lot further, but he showed a lot of poise today. He’s a great leader and the kids playing around him believe in him."
Green has plenty of big options at receiver and tight end. Andrew Armstrong and Tyrone Broden have made impressive leaps and are poised to be in starting roles this season. Armstrong caught three passes for 52 yards and a touchdown. Broden found himself loose in the middle of the endzone for a leaping grab. He tallied five catches for 60 yards and a score.
“[Armstrong and Broden] are big targets and they’re aggressive,” Green said. “When the ball is in the area, it is their ball. Like I said before, it’s not a 50/50 ball, they’ll come down with it.”
During the second quarter, Green zipped a 38-yard pass from the opposite hash mark to tight end Luke Hasz. He returns to the Razorbacks for his sophomore season after a shoulder injury sidelined him a couple of plays into the Texas A&M game.
It’s going to be a tall task for Arkansas improve off a 4-8 season in 2023. There’s a lot of moving parts and the roster is still not set in stone. At least the spring game showed folks that not all is lost yet since players looked bought in for Sam Pittman’s fifth season.
