What did we learn about Auburn's quarterback situation during A-Day?

Per usual, the quarterback position was one of the main topics of conversation throughout spring practice. What do we know with the A-Day scrimmage behind us?

A-Day is in the books, marking the end of spring practice for the 2024-25 season.

The quarterback competition has gotten a lot of attention throughout spring practice and there is more to unpack following the game.

What are three things that were learned about Auburn's quarterback competition and the unit as a whole during A-Day?

Accuracy can be a concern

All four of the quarterbacks, Payton Thorne, Walker White, Hank Brown and Holden Geriner, had some passes that completely missed the mark. Today was not an overly windy day inside Jordan-Hare Stadium and the weather can not be used as an excuse like last year.

Auburn will likely have the most talent in its wide reciever room that it has had in quite some this season, but that will not matter much if accuracy from the quarterbacks is inconsistent.

Head coach Hugh Freeze and quarterbacks coach Kent Austin have some work to do with this group before the fall comes around.

Payton Thorne is likely still in front

Freeze mentioned earlier this week that the starting job is Thorne's to lose. That is likely still the case after today.

Thorne went 9-13 for 133 yards and threw the game's only touchdown, making him the leader in completions, yards and touchdowns.

Additionally, Thorne picked up 27 yards on the ground off of four carries making him the game's leading rusher. That needs to be taken with a grain of salt, however, as the non-contact jerseys donned by the quarterbacks give a significant advantage on the ground.

Hank Brown looked capable in the pocket

The redshirt freshman gained some attention for a streak of completions he put together during Auburn's loss to Maryland in the Music City Bowl. He put together some solid throws today as well.

Brown went 5-12 for 103 yards including a 49-yard pass to Cam Coleman which was the longest pass of the day. He was also the only quarterback to not get sacked.

Brown has momentum heading into the summer and could make things interesting in the competition for the starting job. Even if Brown is unable to overtake Thorne, he will likely get his chances this season.

Auburn opens up the season at home against Alabama A&M on Aug. 31.
