5-Star Auburn Target Cancels Visit With Texas Longhorns
The Auburn Tigers are in business with a 5-star wide receiver.
Auburn already has two 5-star receivers committed in the 2024 class, but there's a very real chance they pick up another one before all is said and done. A third top tier prospect would likely push the Tigers' class into the top five, possibly even top three nationally.
Ryan Williams, who was initially committed to the Alabama Crimson Tide, has now canceled a visit to Texas, one of the three schools he's considering. The Texas A&M Aggies are assumedly Auburn's only competition now.
“I have no clue. I mean I have a clue," Williams said yesterday in an interview with AL.com when asked if he had an idea where he's going. "But I’m really just enjoying it and, hopefully, the decision comes sooner rather than later. But it’s still pretty neck and neck. I think once I come back from this Texas visit, I’ll have a better idea with that being the last place I haven’t been yet.”
No Texas visit means Williams must have a pretty good idea where he's going, considering signing day is coming up on February 7th.
Hugh Freeze and the Tigers have been trying their hardest to flip Williams away from the Crimson Tide, who has been committed to Alabama since October of 2022. They've already flipped fellow five-star receiver Perry Thompson away from the Tide.
Williams caught 88 passes for 1,641 yards and 24 touchdowns, ran for 700 yards and 15 touchdowns on 57 rushes (12.3 yards per carry), returned two punts for touchdowns and passed for a score while leading his high school to a state title.
247Sports describes Williams as a dynamic playmaker who has "nuclear explosion out of cuts" and "projects as a high-major impact player with high-round NFL Draft upside."
The NFL comparison given from national scouting analyst is former Alabama receiver Calvin Ridley.
