Takeaways: Auburn wins game two and the series over #3 South Carolina

Auburn got their biggest win of the season, beating #3 South Carolina 9-5 to win the series and pick up their ninth SEC win of the season.

In SEC baseball, you look at 14 wins as a "magic number" that secures you a spot in a regional. After picking up two massive wins in Columbia, South Carolina, the Tigers are inching closer to that total.

What can we take away from Auburn's huge win over the South Carolina Gamecocks?

Cooper McMurray is here to stay

Cooper McMurray is coming off a week that won him SEC Player of the Week, which made you wonder if he was just hot for a week or if this is who McMurray really is. He has answered that question in this series so far. McMurray was 2-3 in this game with two homers, three RBI's, and a walk. You can tell by the way he is taking pitches how well the Tiger's first baseman is seeing the ball at the dish. It's a bat day to be a baseball when McMurray has a bat in his hand.

Konner Copeland shut the door

We have been saying for months that the Tigers need a reliever other than John Armstrong and Will Cannon to step up, and it has been Konner Copeland of late. He threw four innings in this game, only allowing two runs on a homer. The homer was the one mistake of the outing from the senior lefty. Copeland struck out four and, most importantly, didn't allow a single walk. Copeland picked up his third win of the season in this ball game. He came on late in the year last season, and perhaps that could be in store for Copeland over the last few weeks of the season.

Auburn's defense continues to impress

Auburn has been an excellent defensive team this season, and that showed once again in this ball game. Great plays from Cole Foster and Kason Howell kept multiple runs off the board, helping Auburn win the series securing game two. When you have a pitching staff struggling to fill up the zone, it's a relief to know they have an outstanding defense backing them up. This Tiger's defense has helped win a lot of ball games this season and will continue to do so over the last few weeks of SEC play.

The Tigers still have arms in the pen for Sunday's series finale

Both John Armstrong and Will Cannon will be available for the Tigers on Sunday as they look for the sweep. This is a luxury Auburn hasn't had much this year, as these two were needed early and often in most series. Cannon pitched on Friday, but not enough pitches to hold him out the rest of the series. Hopefully, behind the arm of these two right-handed relievers, Auburn can pull off the massive sweep of #3 South Carolina.
