Lance Dawe 11-2 Auburn
Andrew Stefaniak 6-4 Auburn
Lindsay Crosby's Notes
Head coach Butch Thompson is big on "dominating the routine play" on defense, and for the most part was happy with last night's performance from the position players, minus the fielding error at 3B by Bryson Ware.
When asked, he said the defensive MVP was catcher Nate LaRue - "Nate LaRue was our best defender tonight and I thought he did an amazing job (calling the game) [...] He made one of the best defensive plays I've ever seen on a bunt down the first base line with a runner running right there."
But offense versus defense in the lineup is a balance, and it's possible there's still work to do. Thompson mentioned last night that LaRue "needs to see the ball better" - he went 0-3 with a walk, a strikeout, and an RBI on a fielder's choice.
A potential change the coaching staff might make for offensive reasons is at 1st base - Kansas transfer Cooper McMurray got the start and handled himself well defensively, but his occasional struggles at the plate this spring continued last night. He was 1-4 with a walk, but the strikeouts (3) were bothering Thompson after the game. "He started slow (in preseason), but really came on in the last few days - I was very interested in his at-bats. I thought they got him out the same way every time. And what you're looking for is 'man, okay, we can get out - this is a hard game. Hitting's hard, but to get you out in the same way over and over is something to look at.' "
