Takeaways: Auburn baseball splits doubleheader with UCONN
After Friday's matchup between Auburn and Connecticut got postponed, it became a Saturday doubleheader in Plainsman Park.
The Auburn Tigers took the first game by a score of 8-1. The second game went the way of the UCONN Huskies after they jumped out to a quick lead and held on to win 8-4. Auburn ends the day 8-2 on the season.
Let's take a look at some of our takeaways from the action.
Starting pitching has ups and downs
In game one, junior pitcher Chase Allsup had a bounce-back performance that lasted six frames. After giving up three runs and three walks in just 3.1 innings his last time out, Allsup gave up just one run on a solo shot in the first inning. He quickly settled down and struck out six batters.
Joseph Gonzalez did not have the same success in the second game, getting pulled before the end of the first inning. The junior gave up six earned runs off of four hits and a walk. Christian Herberholz took over for him with two outs in the first inning. He was able to smooth things out a bit and went four innings, but UCONN dug the hole a bit deeper with two more runs off of him.
The offense peaks in game one
The one, two, and three hitters took the game over in the first matchup with five hits and six combined runs batted in. Cooper Weiss and Bobby Pierce each hit home runs. Mason Maners had a nice showing in the first game, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs batting out of the seven-hole.
The Tigers could not get much out of their offense in clutch moments in game two. The bases were loaded in both the seventh and eighth innings but only one run was scored.
Ike Irish speeds his way to 100 career hits
With his solo shot in the second game of the day, Irish reached an important milestone. The sophomore did it in just 68 games, which is the fourth-fewest games to reach that mark in program history. The record is 61 games, held by Scott Pratt who did it back in the late 90s.
