Takeaways: Auburn beats EKU 17-6 in its season-opener
The Auburn Tigers (1-0) picked up an (INSERT) win over the Eastern Kentucky Colonels (0-1) on Opening Day.
Auburn took control early and never trailed. The Tigers overcame early pitching struggles to pick up their first win of the season.
What are the biggest takeaways from the game?
Early offense got things going for Auburn
Seven of Auburn's runs came in the first two innings.
A balk put left fielder Mason Maners across and center fielder Chris Stanfield hit a three-run shot to left center to give the Tigers an early 4-0 lead.
Auburn tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the second inning. If it can put runs across early in games that will lead to a lot of wins in 2024.
Chase Allsup showed promise in his start
Auburn head coach Butch Thompson decided to go with junior right-hander Chase Allsup as the team's opening day starter.
Allsup went 4.2 innings, allowed three runs off of five hits, struck five batters out andM did not give up a single walk. 57 of Allsup's 81 pitches were strikes.
Allsup's start was not perfect, but he showed potential and could be a dependable arm for Auburn this season.
Ike Irish picked up where he left off
Auburn's catcher made an impact as its designated hitter last season. His 2024 campaign is off to a hot start as well.
Irish went 4-5 tonight with a home run and four RBI. He also recorded six put-outs in the field.
The Hudsonville, Michigan native was a difference-maker a year ago and will have an opportunity to make an even bigger impact with the Tigers this season.
