Auburn Basketball goes down on the road at Appalachian State
Coach Bruce Pearl did something most people never do. He scheduled a road game against a non power 5 team. This may benefit his team later in the season. Experience in tough environments and early-season adversity to grow from can pay off in the long run. However, this was a tough place to place yourself. It resulted in the first sellout for Appalachian State since Steph Curry came in 2009. Auburn Basketball is now 5-2.
Playing on the road is difficult. Road losses hurt way less in NCAA tournament seeding consideration than home losses. It’s early in the season, and the college basketball landscape has not worked itself out yet. Lots of good teams are losing games right now. What should the reaction be to Auburn’s loss on Sunday? There are a few concerns, but the bright side is the Tigers have been competitive in their losses away from Neville Arena. They are long and talented. Johni Broome is one of the best players in college basketball.
The primary concern for Auburn is they are shooting poorly. The Tigers have been dreadful from both the free-throw line and beyond the arc. Auburn was 3-27 from three today. That is alarming. The question is whether the Tigers are a good shooting team in a slump or a below-average shooting team. Time will tell. Two things need to happen for Auburn Basketball to have a good season and make a run in March. Aden Holloway needs become a superstar by season's end, and the Tigers need to catch fire from three. Road losses sometimes look worse than they are. The sky is not falling. This team can achieve any goal if these two things happen. Auburn will look to right the ship Saturday against Indiana in Atlanta for Holiday Hoopsgiving.
