Five Reasons Auburn Can Beat Alabama in the Iron Bowl

On paper it may appear to be a mismatch, but the Tigers can win the Iron Bowl.

As you enjoy Thanksgiving leftovers and visits with family, we can all be thankful for the opportunity to watch another Iron Bowl. Many people assume Alabama will dispatch of Auburn quite easily, but for those of us who have grown up around this rivalry, we know things are not always as they appear. No one imagined that 2021 Auburn would take the Crimson Tide into two overtimes. That wasn't supposed to happen, but it did. Similarly no one is expecting The Tigers to be competitive or win this year, but there are five reasons Auburn can win this edition of the Iron Bowl.

1. Stop the run

Auburn's defense has been pretty good at stopping the run this season only allowing 156.5 yards per game. The Tigers will need to hold the Tide below their season average of 229 yards per game to secure a win.

2. Set the edge

The Tigers defense must set the edge and contain Tide quarterback Jalen Milroe. Limiting his mobility and forcing him to make quick decisions while under pressure will be important to Auburn's chances of victory. Alabama is giving up three sacks per game this year and the Tigers will need to get to Milroe at least that much if not more.

3. Turnovers

Auburn has been good at forcing turnovers all season, they must get at least two Saturday to win the game. Forcing Milroe to pass will give the Tiger's pass rush the opportunity to create a fumble and their elite and talented secondary some more chances for interceptions.

4. Shorten the game

The Tigers must be able to establish the running game and keep drives going to shorten the game. If Auburn can put together a couple of long drives and keep Alabama off the field, that will go a long way to help their cause. Payton Thorne must make good decisions and the right decisions at key moments throughout and the receivers have got to make plays when they have the opportunity.

5. Jordan-Hare Stadium

Playing this game at Pat Dye Field in Jordan-Hare Stadium adds another element to the rivalry. Alabama hates playing here and it often gets in their heads. Unexplainable things happen in this game, in this stadium. Don't doubt it, the home field advantage will be a factor.
