Auburn football has taken a bit of a fall over the last half decade.

Now underneath Hugh Freeze, the Tigers are trying to rebound after a disastrous two seasons with Bryan Harsin.

There are signs of progress in year one, but the overall 5-4 record will need improving in future seasons. With better recruiting, it should.

Kent Smith, writer for Fan Nation's All Hogs, recently wrote a piece telling readers that Auburn football has been relegated to the third-best sport on the Plains.

Smith claims that Auburn football has taken a backseat to its other two biggest sports, basketball and baseball.

"A decade ago, it was Auburn basketball that was the "Oh, yeah, they're still in the SEC" team, but not any more [...] No. 2 on the list is Auburn baseball. They have found a way to be relevant [...] However, no one ever notices Auburn football for the right reasons." Smith wrote.

Smith goes on to degrade Auburn's status as a program in the SEC and calls theme forgotten, not as relevant as their basketball counterpart, and the new Missouri of the conference.

"Maybe one day the football team will be as cool and relevant as its basketball counterpart. Opposing assistant coaches will start showing up in supply closets after games tied up like it's a Scooby Doo episode or a mysterious buzzing will make it impossible to communicate between the press box and the field as Auburn returns to the college football world.

Until then, they're just the new Missouri. They could disappear from next year's schedule as a last minute realignment adjustment and no one would notice."

Since Missouri joined the conference, Auburn is 87-63, 46-50 in conference play (58% win percentage overall). If you cut it down to the last four seasons, Auburn is 22-23. Mizzou is 82-65, 44-51 in SEC play (55.7% win percentage overall), 24-21 in the last four years.

The Tigers have fallen off.
