Jake Crain believes Auburn football can be 'sneaky' under Hugh Freeze
Could Auburn football surprise college football once again this fall?
Jake Crain of The Daily Wire sat down with Zac Blackerby and Darrell Dapprich of the Locked On Auburn podcast to discuss the Tigers' outlook for the 2023 season.
According to Crain, Auburn can be "sneaky" underneath Hugh Freeze in his first season on the Plains.
"I actually think this is one of the very few years where Auburn can be sneaky and you don't want to give anybody any reason," Crain said. And look, they're gonna look at Auburn's roster and the roster is improved, you're not gonna get the benefit of the doubt with the roster you have right now, which is a great weapon to have."
Crain pointed to Georgia's Kirby Smart as an example of a coach who knows how to convince his team they are underdogs. Hugh Freeze won't have to do much convincing/
"We see all these other coaches, you know, brainwashing, I guess, maybe a simpler way to put it, manipulating, whatever, and to think it," Crain said. "I mean, Kirby Smart convinced his team last year he was going seven and five, but you don't want to give anybody any bulletin board material. And I always say bulletin board material doesn't matter during the game. What bulletin board after the first snap you're playing, like you're not thinking about what they said or what he said. You're just trying not to get tired. That's, that's the main thing, but it helps in prep. It helps you focus and prepare. That's what bulletin board material does. And Hugh Freeze is smart enough to know that. And Auburn doesn't have the right to talk right now. So why would you come out and say something that could get your head above popping out of the weeds and let teams start taking you serious?
"You want to be sneaky. You want to be an underdog because at a place like Auburn, you don't get that a lot.”
