Hugh Freeze ‘Absolutely, Positively, Totally Convinced’ Auburn Can Be an Elite Program

Freeze is certain that the Tigers have what it takes to be one of the best teams in the SEC.

Auburn football was close to beating three different top ten teams this season.

But they didn't.

Close losses to Georgia, Ole Miss and Alabama are just those in year one. Losses. The Tigers aren't taking many moral victories this season, especially in a year that included a loss to New Mexico State.

But they competed. They showed signs of life with a year one roster and a brand new coaching staff. That's progress.

Now, Auburn sets out on the recruiting trail to try and get the talent they need to begin to restore the shine to what the program once was.

Freeze is completely convinced that the Tigers can become elite once again.

I am absolutely, positively, totally, convinced this place can be an elite program," Freeze said during Monday morning's press conference. "Now being an elite program in this conference, there’s some others too in it. Does that mean you’re going to win every single game? Probably not. I don’t know if many teams are going to do that anymore, truthfully. But we should be in every game."

It's the atmosphere, the resources, and the investment that has Freeze and his staff believing that Auburn can get out of the lull they've been in for half a decade now.

"This place, the support it has, the energy, the fanbase, the culture, the family feel, the administration alignment, the facilities, everything is here for us to build - and I say build, these things don’t happen overnight - to build a championship team," Freeze said. "And it’s here, and we can do it. I think it’s important that we recruit young men that understand they’re going to be blessed by being at Auburn, we have the resources to bless them. But entitlement doesn’t come with that, and they need to fit the culture and the standard that should be for everybody, regardless of how blessed you feel you are. We should continue to try and earn those everyday because people are investing in us."

With that investment comes appreciation. It's been a blessing to be on the Plains, Freeze says.

He just wishes it could have been a better season.

"But I’m totally convinced, my family loves living here. We love the encouragement you get from the common fan that loves this place, and it’s just been a blessing. I wished we had delivered more wins, but I’ll probably always feel that way."
