Auburn Briefing: Payton Thorne and Robby Ashford both worked with the ones

Getting a feel for who will win the starting quarterback job is becoming difficult.

In this story:

At Tuesday's fall camp practice, we saw Robby Ashford take snaps with the ones in team drills, but Payton Thorne took snaps with the ones against air.

This makes it hard to know who has a perceived lead in this race. It's starting to feel like Coach Freeze will keep the Auburn faithful guessing until he makes his decision public.

Both Thorne and Ashford have a different set of skills that can help this football team, but Coach Freeze made it clear Auburn can win with both of these quarterbacks.

Holden Geriner had a good showing at the Saturday scrimmage but didn't get any time with the starters on Tuesday. Could he be phased out soon? Coach Freeze talked about wanting to get the race from three to two ten days into camp, and we are well past that ten-day mark.

However it works out Coach Freeze and OC Philip Montgomery will put the best player out there who they think can win football games for the Auburn Tigers.

What's happening today

The team will get the day off today as they take the pads off and put on their backpacks to start school on Wednesday. We will hear from Coach Freeze on Thursday and hopefully learn more about the quarterback battle. We will also have a media viewing period on Thursday that will shed more light on the ongoing position battles.

They said it

Auburn defensive coordinator Ron Roberts was asked about true freshman Keldric Faulk and what his role might be this season.

Roberts responded, "He's in there right now fighting for the job. I don't know how it's going to pan out, but he's going to be an impact player for us this season."
