SEC Power Rankings: Georgia, Alabama Lock In SEC Championship Game Appearance
This was the weekend of the beatdown in the SEC. There were seven conference games over the weekend with an average margin of victory being 32 points. Those blowouts blew up the power rankings and set the stage for the SEC Championship Game in Atlanta. Here's how the conference stacks up heading into the home stretch.
1. Georgia (previous 1)
The Dawgs hosted Ole Miss in a matchup of top 10 teams. The Rebels jumped out to an early 7-0 lead, but Georgia answered quickly with 14 points to take a lead they never relinquished and cruised to a 52-17 win over Ole Miss to secure their spot in the SEC Championship Game against Alabama. The Dawgs travel to Knoxville Saturday to take on the Tennessee Volunteers.
2. Alabama (previous 2)
The Crimson Tide traveled north to Lexington and spoiled Kentucky's Senior Day by crushing the Cats 49-21. Alabama wrapped up the West with the win and gets a breather this week against Chattanooga before heading to Auburn for the season finale.
3. LSU (previous 4)
Jayden Daniels just went crazy on the Florida Gators as he accumulated 606 yards of offense and five touchdowns in the Tigers 52-35 win. In all LSU racked up 701 yards of total offense as they improved to 7-3 on the season. LSU hosts Sunbelt foe Georgia State this week before closing out the season against Texas A&M.
4. Missouri (previous 5)
Missouri welcomed Tennessee to Columbia and then promptly took them behind the woodshed for a beating. After a scoreless first quarter, The Tigers took a 13-7 lead to the locker room at the half. Tennessee was still in the game, but as they have so many times this year, the Vols couldn't generate any offensive production in the second stanza. Mizzou outscored UT 23-0 and cruised to a 36-7 victory. These Tigers can hunt and will look to close out the season strong as they face Florida this week followed by a game with Arkansas.
5. Ole Miss (previous 3)
Lane Kiffin took his Ole Miss Rebels to Athens for a prime time matchup with the Georgia Bulldogs. While the Rebels put up a respectable fight, they were not quite ready to take down the best team in the conference. Ole Miss and Lane Kiffin have not been able to break through to that next level yet, and they'll have to wait until next year for another shot. The Rebels take on Louisiana-Monroe this week before the annual Egg Bowl with Mississippi State on Thanksgiving.
6. Texas A&M (previous 8)
The Aggies took care of business Saturday, taming the Mississippi State Bulldogs 51-10. The win improved their record to 6-4, but it wasn't enough to save Jimbo Fisher as time ran out on his tenure in Aggie Land. Associate head coach Elijah Robinson will lead A&M as the interim head coach for the remainder of the season as they host Abilene Christian this week and travel to LSU Thanksgiving weekend.
7. Auburn (previous 9)
The Auburn Tigers traveled to Fayetteville to take on Arkansas and proceeded to turn the football game into a pig roast. The Razorbacks were cooked before they even got warmed up, as the Tigers jumped out to a 21-0 lead before the Hogs managed a first down. The Tigers rolled up 517 yards of offense on their way to a 48-10 road win. Auburn becomes bowl eligible at 6-4 with two games left on the schedule. A win over New Mexico State this week would give the Tigers a chance at an eighth win when they play Alabama November 25.
8. Tennessee (previous 6)
The Vols took on the Tigers from Mizzou Saturday and were trounced 36-7. Though trailing 13-7 at the half, UT was still in the game. Any hope of a comeback was quickly wiped away as the Tigers put up another 9 points in the third quarter taking a 22-7 lead into the fourth. Missouri finished off the Vols, scoring another 14 unanswered in the fourth to make the final score 36-7. A lot of questions need to be answered by Josh Heupel's team and they need to do it quickly as Georgia comes to town this weekend.
9. Kentucky (previous 7)
Kentucky had high hopes of getting a program changing win this weekend as they hosted Alabama for Senior Day. In the end it was just another beat down for the Crimson Tide as the Cats fell behind 21-7 early and could never catch up, eventually losing 49-21. Still, Kentucky is 6-4 on the season and with games against South Carolina and Louisville still on the horizon, should have a good chance to get to seven or eight wins and a decent bowl game.
10. Florida (previous 10)
The Gators went for a walk through the valley of the shadow of death this weekend in Baton Rouge. Death came in the form of Jayden Daniels, as he had his way with the Florida defense and the offense just couldn't keep up. Florida traded blows for awhile, but in the end succumbed to the Tigers 52-35. The Gators hopes of making a bowl game are slim as they must beat either Missouri this week or Florida State next week to become bowl eligible.
11. South Carolina (previous 12)
South Carolina took out their season long frustrations on Vanderbilt as they bombed the Commodores 47-6. The Gamecocks must win out to reach a bowl game. That will be a tough task as they face Kentucky and Clemson in their next two games.
12. Mississippi State (previous 13)
The Bulldogs can't get this season over fast enough. After Saturday's 51-10 thrashing at Texas A&M, MSU has been outscored 102-26 in their last three games. State must win out to reach a bowl, but that will be difficult as they play Southern Miss and Ole Miss to close out the season.
13. Arkansas (previous 11)
Sitting in the bottom of the SEC west is not where this Arkansas team expected to be in July, but that is exactly where they find themselves after a 48-10 loss to Auburn. The score was not even that close, which is why so many of the Hog fans vacated Reynolds-Razorback Stadium at halftime trailing 27-3. Sam Pittman probably won't survive the off-season, if he makes it that long. The Hogs are in a world of hurt and at 3-7 won't be making any post-season appearance. It's all about pride now for the Razorbacks, as they face Florida International this week before closing out the season against a really good Missouri team.
14. Vanderbilt (previous 14)
Another week of SEC football and another blowout loss for Vanderbilt football. This time South Carolina lit up the Commodores for 47 points. Vandy has been outscored 148-48 in their last four games and there doesn't seem to be any reason to expect improvement as the season comes to a close against Tennessee in two weeks. Vandy will miss out on a bowl game this year and regroup in the off-season.
