Is TCU Football Really this Good Or Just on a Lucky Streak?
Baylor Bears football has ridden the high of being a preseason top-10 team and felt the low of crashing to 6-4. TCU football has felt the low of firing a coach — one with a statue on the campus, by the way — just to ride the high of becoming America's darling in the playoff race.
These two teams have had wildly different trajectories this season, honing in on TCU's offense shows just why the Horned Frogs are genuinely a scary football team.
Sonny Dykes' team is currently No. 1 in the Big 12 in scoring offense at 40.5 points per game and total offense with 486 yards per game. Those marks are 8th and 12th respectively in the nation.
A passing efficiency of 169 and a 7.0 yards per play average are both good enough for second place in the Big 12 and top-10 in America. Wouldn't you know, those stats would be even gaudier had the Horned Frogs not put up just 17 points in a win against Texas last week.
Prior to its game in Austin, TCU scored 34 points or more in every contest this year.
Then there's Max Duggan. While it was this season's backup Chandler Morris that carved Baylor for over 500 yards last season, Duggan has the reigns this Saturday. And he's been nothing but great with those reigns in hand.
Duggan is first in the Power 5 with 15 touchdown passes of 20 yards or more. He is also first in the Big 12 in passing efficiency (172.6), passing touchdowns (25), yards per completion (14.1) and yards per attempt (9.3).
And if you're thanking God that this is the final time the Bears will deal with Duggan, he still has his COVID year of eligibility to use next season.
So, how do you stop the Horned Frogs? That's for Dave Aranda to figure out. I've got nothing. There's no fraud here. The Frogs are actually remarkable.
