Baylor Bears Land Coveted QB Sawyer Robertson
Highly-touted transfer portal quarterback Sawyer Robertson announced his commitment to play for the Baylor Bears on Twitter Tuesday.
Robertson comes to Baylor from Mississippi State, where he attempted just 11 passes for the Bulldogs in his freshman season in 2022. As an elite recruit out of Lubbock Coronado (TX), Robertson looked every bit like a quarterback who would excel at the next level. Standing at nearly 6'4" and 200 pounds, he certainly has the the build of a true signal-caller.
While Robertson can put mustard on his throws, he really picked teams apart in the mid-range passing game in high school. While not throwing the ball very deep, he had great accuracy and poise, something that should go a long way in the offense Jeff Grimes runs at Baylor.
In his Coronado career, Robertson threw for over 12,000 yards and 146 touchdowns to just 22 picks on 65% passing. Based on the numbers and the great tape he put out in high school, he had more than a few major college football programs seeking his signature this winter after he put his name into the portal.
Robertson joins at a desperate hour for the Bears quarterback room. After backup Kyron Drones transferred to Virginia Tech, elite prospect Austin Novosad flipped his commitment to the Oregon Ducks just hours before signing his letter of intent to become a Bear. Robertson's commitment also came after former Texas Tech and Michigan quarterback Alan Bowman visited campus last week, before he committed to Oklahoma State.
Blake Shapen and Robertson are currently the only scholarship quarterbacks on the roster.
